Safety
London traffic is dangerous. Please pay great attention to traffic at all times and make sure you are not so absorbed by the commentary that you become careless. Because earphones tend to isolate you from surrounding noise, we advise that you always pause the audio guide when crossing a road.
Use pedestrian crossings where possible, even if this means going a few metres out of your way. And watch out for uneven pavements and obstacles like bollards or parked bicycles.

Security
It is a good idea to carry as little with you as possible when doing walks. You will need a free hand to operate your CD or tape player, and it is safer not to carry valuables when exploring cities.

CD, iPod and tape players
Before you start walking, make sure you know where the pause button is on your CD, iPod or tape player, and how to reverse and fast forward for short stretches.

Maps
We have compiled the walks so that you should not need a map if you listen carefully to directions. However, each recording comes with a simple map on the reverse of the label. And we give a link to the appropriate page of Streetmap.co.uk on the website synopsis of each walk – you can print this out and take it with you.

Special notes
Some walks may include routes through buildings which are only open during certain hours. We give these times in each walk synopsis. We also tell you if it is better to do some walks on certain days of the week, for example, when a particular market is open.
On some walks we suggest you may want to enter a building (a museum or a church, for instance). We will list these buildings in each walk synopsis so that you can check the opening hours if you want to visit them while doing the walk.

Walking with a companion
Footnotes audio walks are ideal for anyone who wants to explore on their own. But it's also fun to share a walk. We offer discounts on orders for two tapes of the same walk

wheelchair access Accessibility
Each walk synopsis gives information about major features which may make the walk unsuitable for wheelchair walkers and people with mobility impairment. Where there is a problem we try to suggest ways round it. We tell you if a walk is obviously unsuitable.
